Michael Gonzalez and Roberto Zatarain Tryout for Keene FC of the UPSL

FC Denton was well represented at Keene FC's first tryout for their inaugural season in the United Premier Soccer League, as Michael Gonzalez and Roberto Zatarain stepped up to compete for a spot for the league's newest team.

The FCDTN players arrived at Keene High School to cold and windy conditions and joined the 30+ players from around the DFW, as they gathered to meet new head coach and former Nigerian nation team member, Ebenezer Fobowaje, AKA "Coach Ebby". After a brief talk and introduction, he sent the Keene FC hopefuls off on a warm-up/challenge, where he asked for 5 laps around the field to be completed in 5 minutes; 1 minute per lap. After getting a good snap shot of the players' current fitness level and some stretching, Coach Ebby split up the group for a full 90 minute scrimmage. As luck would have it, Gonzalez and Zatarain were placed on opposing teams, which made things interesting for Gonzalez.

"I was a little disappointed not to be on the same team as Roberto for the scrimmage and it's tough playing with 10 strangers while trying to impress as a midfielder, but that's how tryouts go sometimes", Gonzalez told fcdentonsoccer.com

After a lively 90 minutes, that included Gonzalez coming close on 2

free kick attempts, rattling the post off of

one of his trademark shots from his foot-bazooka and Zatarain bagging 2 beautiful goals (and coming close a number of times); Coach Eb by deliberated with his coaching staff and selected a group to be invited back for a second round of tryouts.

In the group that were invited back were both Michael Gonzalez and Roberto Zatarain!

"It's really an honor to be considered for Keene FC's first team and to be able to work with someone who played at the international level like Coach Ebby, but we know that nothing's accomplished yet and this only means that we have to step up our training...we'll see what happens". Roberto Zatarian told fcdentonsoccer.com. "Thankfully, we have FC Denton to help us get there".

Both players will report for round 2 on January 27th at Alvarado HS as they continue to fight for a spot on the UPSL's newest team.

The United Premier Soccer League (UPSL) was formed in Los Angeles in 2011 with the goal of providing a competitive league platform for players seeking to play at higher levels. Today the league is the fastest-growing of its kind in the United States. Arranged into five geographic conferences, the UPSL runs two separate seasons. Each season, the top clubs from every conference meet in a playoff series to determine the league champion. All UPSL teams compete in the Lamar U.S. Open Cup. upslsoccer.com
